Eczema refers to a range of continually recurring skin diseases marked by dryness and skin rashes. It is a form of dermatitis characterized by symptoms that include redness, swelling, itchiness, crusting, flaking, oozing, cracking and even bleeding. Usually one or more of these symptoms are present in this type of dermatitis. Scarring is rare but skin discoloration may be apparent after healing of lesions. It is distinguished from psoriasis. While psoriasis occurs especially on the scalp, ears, genitalia and the skin over bony prominences, this type of dermatitis occurs mainly on the flexors. It is also classified into different types that include atopic, contact, allergic, infantile (cradle crap) and seborrheic. While some of the types are persistent others may come and go. A rare condition of the disease known as housewife’ dermatitis occurs on palms and soles and sides of fingers and toes. Not only does it cause extreme discomfort it may also flare up due to allergies and other environmental factors. Although more common in infants and children this condition also affects adults. The condition may sometimes be defined on the basis of location (e.g. hand) or by possible cause (varicose) or by appearance (discoid).

The most common eczema treatment involves the use of corticosteroids. Although these do not provide a permanent cure, they can be very effective in controlling the disease by suppressing the symptoms of the disease. The type of steroids used depends upon the severity of the condition. Creams with different concentrations, weak, moderate and high potency, are available. In many countries, including USA, weak steroids can be bought over the counter without a prescription. The general practice is to first use a less potent cream before trying a strong steroid. Chronic use of high potency topical corticosteroids increases the risk of side effects.

Possible side effects include the skin becoming thin and fragile. It is because of this that it is recommended that an eczema cream of an appropriate potency should be used and that too sparingly, especially on the face and delicate skin.

After the desired result has been achieved, one can start maintenance therapy with moisturizers and other soothing agents. There is no permanent eczema cure but the use of conventional medication and natural therapies in conjunction with a changed lifestyle can help in management of the disease.

Eczema natural cure involves the use of natural oils like Mentha piperita oil and vitamin E oil and other herbal ingredient that promote a healthy skin. Such herb based creams also incorporate natural ingredients that provide relief from itching and discomfort caused by the disease.

You can maintain skin health by eating a healthy diet and avoiding foods such as dairy products, mushrooms and lobster, crab and shrimp. Use mild soaps and use natural moisturizers daily to prevent dry skin. These tips will go a long way to avoid eczema.

Most people seek hair loss treatment that is quick and provides a permanent solution. Hair is not only an essential part of your body but also of your identity. Hair loss can greatly affect your work especially if you are in sales or are seeking a partner. The medical term for this is alopecia. It defines partial or total baldness. Unlike removal of hair for aesthetic purposes, alopecia is involuntary and mostly unwelcome. Sometimes there is a psychological compulsion of pulling one’s hair, a condition called trichotillomania. Alopecia may also be an unforeseen consequence of deliberate hairstyling such as ponytails, braids and burns to the scalp. It may also be due to an underlying medical condition including iron deficiency and seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disease that affects the scalp as well as the body and trunk. The side effect of inflammation due to the disease may cause temporary alopecia. Since the condition tends to recur frequently, untreated severe attacks can damage hair follicles and lead to permanent baldness.

In the hurry to seek a quick solution to alopecia most people tend to ignore the hair loss cause, which is crucial for a treatment to be effective. There are multiple causes of partial or total alopecia. Male pattern baldness is usually related to genetics and aging. Various medical conditions, including hypothyroidism, fungal infection and hormonal imbalances can also lead to alopecia in varying patterns. Treatment of the underlying condition usually results in reversal and resumption of normal hair growth.

The biggest mistake that most people make is choosing a hair loss product without determining the cause. It is imperative that you keep in mind the cause behind alopecia to avoid disenchantment. For example, prevention of aging and falling out of healthy hair requires a different product than for re-growing hair in dead follicles.

Before deciding on treatment, it is important to understand that all cases of loss of hair are different. Conventional treatment for alopecia involves the use of drugs such as minoxidil and finasteride. While the first is available over the counter the second requires a valid prescription. Conventional treatments are slow and may take up to 6 months before visible results.

Hair loss causes also include a genetic predisposition to alopecia. Recently, researchers in Japan have identified the gene responsible for alopecia in humans. Just as there are many causes there are also numerous products available for treatment for alopecia. There may also be a case for treating alopecia may sometimes involve hair transplant or laser treatment.

Involuntary hair falling can sometimes be prevented by changing lifestyles including dietary modifications, avoiding stress and adopting sensible hairstyles. Fungal infection can be prevented by not sharing combs, hats and brushes. Keep your hair clean and as much as possible use natural and moderate products if you wish to avoid hair loss treatment later on.

Ask any traditional doctor and you are likely to hear a thing or two against aloe vera gel. The fact is that aloe vera has a long association with alternative therapies especially herbal medicine. The curative properties of aloe vera find mention in documents dating as back as 16th century BC. Gel made from aloe vera after removal of aloin is safe and has no side effects. The gel is commonly is used in lotions, yoghurt, beverages and some desserts. Aloe vera derivatives are also used by the cosmetic industry for making make up tissues, sunscreens, soaps, shampoos and incense. Aloe vera speeds up the healing process and is an effective treatment for wounds. It is also used as a topical application for treatment of genital herpes and skin disorders like psoriasis and dermatitis. However, the medical fraternity refuses to accept all this in absence of concrete medical evidence.

Aloe Vera leaves contain a variety of biologically active compounds some of which have been extensively studied. Aloe vera extracts have anti fungal and antibacterial properties and inhibit skin mycosis, condition in which fungi cross the resistance barriers of the body and establish fungal infections. These usually form a part of natural topical lotions and creams used for treating skin infection and other skin disorders like dermatitis and eczema. In fact, aloe vera skin treatment is one of the most popular herbal treatments. Gel made from inner leaf of aloe vera has demonstrated inhibition of growth of bacteria belonging to Streptococcus and Shigella species. Preliminary studies suggest that aloe vera may reduce inflammation in patients suffering from ulcerative colitis.

As late as 2003, aloin, the purgative element in aloe vera, was an important ingredient in over the counter laxatives available in USA. After being banned by the FDA, manufacturers now remove aloin. Processed aloe vera serves as a digestive healer. Aloe vera juice provides relief from digestive problems like heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome.

Aloe vera is stemless succulent plant that grows up to 60-100cm or 24-39 inches. The leaves are green to grey green and thick. Aloe vera plant was initially grown as a decorative plant. It is now popular with modern gardeners as a medicinal plant and widely grown to supply the cosmetic and beverage industry with Aloe vera extracts.

A lot of research is required to establish its curative properties. The sad part is that natural products cannot be patented. Since big corporate do not find it profitable in absence of patenting of natural substances they are not interested in funding research for the extensive studies required for scientific evidence of aloe vera benefits.

Despite conflicting evidence provided by the little amount of research done on aloe vera, preliminary evidence is available for the positive effects of aloe vera. Aloe vera extracts in beverages is an effective digestive aid. Aloe vera gel, on the other hand, applied on the skin restores the pH balance and effectively treats various skin diseases.

Cradle cap is a common name for infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It is a common and harmless skin condition that normally affects babies between two to six months. It is also known as crusta lacteal, honeycomb disease and milk crust. It is characterized by a yellowish scaly skin rash on the scalp. The skin appears greasy, patchy and crusty. Normally it does not bother the baby since it is not itchy. It is very common and nearly half of the babies are affected sometime around the first three months. It is prominent near the ears, eyebrows or eyelids but may spread to face, armpits and buttocks. However, it is usually mild and severe manifestation is very rare. The exact cause is not known but it is believed that hormones released by the mother during the last stages of pregnancy overstimulation of the baby’s sebaceous glands. As in adults, infantile seborrheic dermatitis is caused by overactive sebaceous glands. The excess oil secreted by the glands eventually changes into crusty patches and flakes off. It may also be due to a fungal over growth in the scalp. Since the condition may get itchy at times and cause discomfort to the baby, it is better to use preventive measures.

When baby cradle cap occurs in places other than the scalp it is referred to as seborrheic dermatitis. It is wrong to believe that it is due to poor hygiene or an allergy. Some nutritional experts believe that the disorder is due to the inability of baby’s underdeveloped digestive system to absorb adequate biotin and other B vitamins.

Preventive measures include using a cradle cap shampoo meant for this specific condition. While choosing a shampoo for the baby, it should be kept in mind that the baby skin is too delicate to tolerate harsh chemicals in adult shampoos. It is advisable to check that the shampoo is mild or better still, choose one that contains only natural ingredients.

Cradle cap babies usually recover without any intervention but you can also help. Gently massage the affected areas with virgin almond oil or olive oil and let t remain for an hour before you give the baby his bath. Avoid picking flakes or try to remove stubborn patches. This may cause irritation, pain discomfort or even lead to an infection.

Any other type of cradle cap treatment should be avoided. The basic mantra of treating this condition is to keep the skin naturally clean. Shampoos containing steroids and tar have their drawbacks and antifungal shampoos are currently being made with ingredients that can irritate and cause allergies. Other products, especially immunosuppressive products are not approved for baby use.

If the eyelids are affected, they should be cleaned with diluted no-tears baby shampoo. The softened scales should be gently brushed away. Applying baking soda paste and letting it remain for 20 minutes will also help in softening the scales. Mothers can rest assured because cradle cap does not indicate any underlying illness.

Any healing practice that does not fall within the domain of conventional medicine is termed as alternative medicine by the western world. The term refers to even ancient therapies such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda that are time tested and still in practice in the country of their origin. It also refers to naturopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic manipulations, meditation, yoga, biofeedback and homeopathy. Basically, it is an inclusive term that includes everything outside allopathic medicine, even diet based therapies. It is actually a contradictory state of affairs. Conventional medicine negates alternative therapies and medicine on the basis that they are not supported by scientific evidence. The fact is that many conventional medicine techniques also lack solid evidence. The absence of evidence in alternative treatments is highlighted but the fact that they are time tested is ignored.

In addition, conventional medicine goes out of the way to side track the issue of side effects of drugs associated with allopathic drugs and treatments. Admittedly, conventional medicine provides quick relief and is the first choice in emergencies. These plus points however come at a high cost, the cost of serious side effects of allopathic drugs that are sometimes more difficult to manage than the illness they are supposed to treat. Moreover, allopathic treatments provide a sure cure for a very small number of illnesses. On the other hand, alternative medicines are safe but slow. They have a natural and holistic approach to illness. Alternative therapies consider the patient as a whole and do not attempt to suppress symptoms for temporary relief.

The sad part is that we live in an age where people do not have time for slow treatments nor for dietary modifications and rest, which are integral to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM is an umbrella term that includes alternative therapies and some interventions when used in conjunction with conventional medicine and techniques.

Basically, the term complementary alternative medicine is not clearly defined. At best it can be defined as systems of treatment, their modalities and beliefs that do not belong to the dominant health system of a particular culture in a given historical period. For example, Ayurveda is still valued in many parts of India.

Health alternative medicine solutions are not only safer they are also cheaper. The major reason behind high cost of conventional drugs is the greed of pharmaceutical companies. They try to hide their high markups under the cover of high cost of research and clinical trials. The question is why treatments suggested by alternative therapies not researched with same vigor.

The answer is not difficult to find. Alternative therapies are based on natural substances and techniques and natural substances cannot be patented. Without enforceable patents pharmaceutical companies cannot make the type of profits they are used to. Although allopathic medicine has a big role to play, alternative medicine can succeed where pharmaceutical drugs fail.

Cream of magnesia is a milk-like solution of hydroxide of magnesium in water. Technically it is Mg(OH)2 and sometimes also referred to as MOH. The hydroxide of magnesium is a white crystalline powder used chiefly in medicines. It can be very useful in treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as seborrheic eczema is a skin disease that mainly affects the scalp and face but may also be seen on other parts of the body as well. Basically, the disorder does not cause too much harm but it is apparently unpleasant and itchy. The itch however is moderate but persistent. While it is easily controllable with available medication, it is known to recur after sometime. Conventional treatment involves using topical applications containing topical corticosteroids. While mild concentrations of corticosteroids in short term use is generally considered safe, chronic treatments can potentially lead to permanent skin changes. Considering this aspect of treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, it is usually recommended that chronic cases be treated with natural remedies.

Magnesia milk is an effective treatment for seborrhea. Applying the solution can help in clearing seborrheic dermatitis. The correct method of use is to apply it while showering and rinsing it afterwards. It is safe to use it on the face as well. It is a creamy solution and easily available over the counter without a prescription. While this is a convenient treatment of the disorder other suggested treatments include nutritional supplements like biotin, zinc and flaxseed oil. A gentle moisturizer or an air humidifier may also be used to ease symptoms associated with the disorder.

Malassezia furfur, yeast that is widely present is considered to be the causative agent of seborrhea. A magnesium hydroxide formula may contain other natural ingredients meant specifically for alleviating symptoms of the disorder by inhibiting the growth of yeast. UV light may also be used for restricting growth of this yeast caution has to be exercised to avoid sun damage.

Magnesium hydroxide has other medicinal properties also. It is also used to relieve constipation. It is also available in chewable tablets and used for alleviating indigestion and acidity. Physicians mostly recommend taking it with a glass of water for easier absorption. Taken internally by mouth it also serves as an effective and safer laxative.

While it is commonly known as milk of magnesia, the name is a brand that is presently registered to Bayer but its generic versions are commonly available. It is an important folk remedy for seborrhea and dandruff. Best results are seen by massaging the affective area for five to ten minutes immediately before bathing or shampooing.

Ingestion of this creamy liquid is associated with potential reactions with antibiotics. Excessive internal intake may lead to diarrhea in some cases. People with impaired kidney function are also advised to avoid overconsumption because of risk of interference in kidney function of excreting magnesium. Cream of magnesia as a topical application is safe for treating seborrheic dermatitis.

Dryness can lead to flaking of the skin. It is more common in the elderly but some people may be born with it. Aged skin tends to be drier but dryness may also be caused by frequent washing and bathing, especially with soaps containing harsh chemicals. Dry skin gets worse in winters regardless of age. This is mainly due to low outdoor humidity and heated indoors that make the skin drier and flaky. Scales or flakes may also appear on any part of the body due to skin damage, skin irritation or inflammation. These conditions may occur due to sunburn, allergic reactions, poison ivy, psoriasis or seborrhea. Seborrheic dermatitis commonly affects the scalp forming yellowish and greasy scales. The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not known but various factors including overactive sebaceous glands, genetic, environmental, hormonal factors and a widely present yeast, are involved in occurrence of the condition. The epidermis responds unfavorably in this infection and the skin becomes inflamed and flaky. In children this is mostly caused due to inadequate consumption or absorption of vitamins.

Flaking scalp may also be due to a number of other conditions including dandruff, eczema and other types of dermatitis. Eczema is a blanket term used to describe skin disorders that cause dry scales and peeling skin or flakes. There are many treatment options but the primary thing is to moisturize the skin. First of all change your soap and choose a mild soap. Pat your skin dry after bathing rather than rubbing it hard and apply a moisturizer immediately after you dry up.

Flaking skin on the face particularly nose, hairline and eyebrows, can be treating with home remedies like a massage with milk of magnesia immediately before showering. You could also choose a mild (0.5%) hydrocortisone cream available over the counter. Severe conditions require treatment with corticosteroids. However, long term treatment with corticosteroids should be done with care.

Scalp flakes may also be due to dandruff. Actually, it is excessive shedding of the dead cells from the scalp. It is normal for skin cells to die off and flake. Some amount of peeling off is quite common but some people experience chronic peeling of the skin due to prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infection.

Skin flakes are due the same underlying conditions that cause skin in the scalp to peel off. The condition may also be treated with UV light provided adequate precautions are taken to avoid sunburns caused by excessive exposure. Flaky skin without visible signs of infection is normal and should not be a cause of concern.

Most skin disorders are conventionally treated with topical steroidal creams, which may not be advisable due to the permanent change in the appearance of the skin that they are liable to cause if used over prolonged periods. If you experience flaking in your scalp or any part of the body, it pays to be cautious while seeking conventional treatments.

Progesterone is a steroid hormone naturally produced in the body and progesterone levels play an important role in human embryogenesis as well as overall health. It belongs to group of steroid hormones known as progestogens and progesterone is a progestogen that occurs naturally in the human body. It plays a major role in the female menstrual cycle as well as pregnancy to support development of the embryo. It is produced in the ovary and prepares and maintains the uterus for pregnancy. Progesterone is also artificially produced from tropical vines of the genus Discorea or yams. A steroid called diosgenin is extracted from the tuber of the plant and converted to progesterone in the lab. Progesterone has many medical applications, especially in acute conditions and to address the issue of decline in the level of natural progesterone. While supplemental progesterone can help maintain pregnancy, it has side effects.

In women, levels of progesterone are relatively on the lower side before ovulation. The level increases after ovulation and remain elevated during the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation. If pregnancy occurs the elevated levels are maintained for some time and later rise even further to support pregnancy. Progesterone has numerous physiological effects. High progesterone levels interfere with the corticosteroid produced by the adrenal cortex for regulating salt and water balance. This may lead to a condition known as natriuresis or presence of excess sodium in urine. Elevated levels of progesterone stimulate sebaceous glands and increase sebum production. This can potentially trigger a flare up of seborrhea and eventually to seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrhea a condition in which over-activity of the sebaceous glands causes the skin to become oily. Sebum production usually starts at puberty and triggered by a circulating testosterone metabolite. Since progesterone in males is produced during production of testosterone and by ovaries in women, elevated progesterone level can trigger seborrheic dermatitis.

Low progesterone levels, on the other hand can cause insomnia, dizziness, irritability, mood swings, difficulty in concentrating bloating and weight gain and a host of other symptoms. Supplemental progesterone is normally recommended to make up the deficiency. However, monitoring is important for regulating the level s so that it does lead to elevated levels.

Seborrhea in adults is a recurring condition and often requires prolonged treatment. Seborrheic dermatitis is conventionally treated with topical creams containing steroidal hormones. Maintaining normal progesterone levels during treatment of seborrheic dermatitis is all more important, especially in the case of people who are genetically predisposed. Seborrhea may manifest in intestines.

A bout of seborrhea can also be triggered by fungal infection. Seborrhea occurs most in areas that are rich in sebaceous glands and a type of yeast has an affinity to the sebum produced by these glands and its build up causes the irritation, flaky skin and redness. Keeping progesterone levels in check may sometimes help in arresting infection.

Skin rejuvenation or exfoliation is removal of dead skin cells, the outermost and the oldest. It is an ancient technique for maintaining skin health. Today it is an important part of body treatments meted out in parlors and spas. It may be done mechanically or with the use of chemicals. Generally speaking, to exfoliating is another name for scrubbing. Mechanical exfoliating is done with the help of abrasives. It includes the use of microfiber cloths, exfoliating sheets, finely crushed apricot kernels and almond shells and a host of other abrasive materials like sponges, brushes and dried parts of fibrous plants. While pumice is good for exfoliating feet, people with dry skin should avoid exfoliating with materials that have a substantial portion of pumice. Hard exfoliating products should also be avoided by people suffering from dermatitis or eczema of any type including seborrheic dermatitis. To exfoliate with chemicals involves scrubs containing acids like salicylic, citric or glycolic acid and fruit enzymes. Products containing alpha hydroxyl acids or beta hydroxyl acids or enzymes that loosen the dead cells ‘glued’ together are also used for exfoliating dead skin. Some techniques like waxing and wet shaving are other examples of exfoliating ares covered with hair.

An exfoliating scrub is normally advertised in media for enhancing beauty, improving skin health and for giving a youthful appearance. However, scrubs are also an important part of natural skin care and also help in managing skin diseases like seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrhea is commonly referred to as dandruff, the unpleasant white flakes that fall from the scalp. In reality, seborrhea can occur in any part of the body, especially areas that are rich in sebaceous glands. The sad part is that there is no permanent cure for seborrhea. Scrubbing with mild exfoliating products can however provide temporary relief. It should be noted that seborrhea can recur.

Exfoliating skin can help for managing acne, blackheads, dry or oily skin and rough skin. By exfoliating the skin you expose the new cells that are produced in the lower layer. You can also exfoliate your skin with a variety of peels available over the counter.

Just as in the case of scrubs, you have an option to choose between mechanical peels and enzyme peels. You may also choose exfoliating bar soap. Exfoliating soaps are convenient and an easy way to get rid of dead flaky skin.

Another option is that of exfoliating cream. These mostly contain natural detergents with different ingredients such as crushed apricot kernel or almond shell for the scrubbing effect. Most of these are based on natural substances and are available in different fragrances.

If you have seborrhea you need to choose an exfoliating product with care because not all products that contain natural ingredients are created equal and some may have higher concentrations of acids. Exfoliation with harsh chemicals and steroid based products may cause further harm.

Seborrheic dermatitis also referred to as dandruff or simply dermatitis is a chronic skin condition. It occurs due to overactive sebaceous glands that produce too much oil and the skin turns red and looks dry and inflamed. It affects the scalp, face and trunk leading to a scaly, flaky and itchy skin. The condition is apparently embarrassing and may cause a fair amount of itching but is basically harmless. It is easily treated and total remission is possible. However, it is likely to recur after some months or years. It is generally termed as a kind of eczema but is not the same. Sebaceous glands are distributed all over the skin except palms and soles. These microscopic glands secrete an oily substance, sebum, which is actually meant for protecting the skin. The basic cause of dermatitis is not known but factors like infestation with a yeast-like organism and hormone and stress may be responsible. It can affect children, adults and the elderly but is generally more common in women.

The foaming agent used in soaps and detergents causes dryness in the top layers of the skin and may lead to a flare up of dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis treatment usually involves a suitable alternative to ordinary soaps and shampoos. Products containing selenium sulfide, ciclopiroxolamine, ketoconazole, or zinc pyrithione are usually recommended by dermatologists. For severe manifestation of the disease shampoos containing salicyclic acid or coal tar or pine tar may be used to remove stubborn scale. In addition, various nutritional supplements are also recommended. These include 3mg of biotin, a B vitamin, 20-30mg of zinc and I tablespoon of flaxseed oil. When nothing seems to work then a prescription drug containing isotretinoin may be recommended for reducing production of sebum.

Scalp seborrheic dermatitis may also be treated with topical 1% terbinafine solution. Another water soluble topical solution that has been shown to treat scalp dermatitis is an ointment containing 50mg of Vitamin B6 per gram. Some topical lotions containing corticosteroids are also effective but care should be taken since chronic treatment may lead to permanent skin changes.

Although the condition cannot be prevented, it can be controlled. Natural seborrheic dermatitis control is also possible with good hygiene. Management of the disorder is also possible with the use of shampoos containing selenium sulfide and tea tree oil. The affected area should be washed daily.

Natural treatments are usually not supported by medical evidence. Aloe vera is one of the most popular natural treatments of dermatitis. One may apply milk of magnesia on face and body during showering. Face seborrheic dermatitis is manageable by shaving off facial hair such as beard and moustache.

While more people are inclined towards natural treatments, dermatitis is a stubborn condition that may be difficult to treat without recourse to medicated shampoos and other conventional treatments. You should however ensure that the product you use for treating seborrheic dermatitis contains safer ingredients.
